Untitled, Africa (1)
- 24 x 20 in
This painting on cradled hardboard is based on several photos I took while staying near Amboseli National Park in Kenya. The orange light of early dawn was as spellbinding as the scenery and I wanted to use abstraction to explore the interplay of color, texture and light. The composition abstracts the landscape, capturing not only the visual characteristics but also the ephemeral mood of sunrise in this iconic African setting. The painting’s color palette transitions from deep greens and blues in the foreground to warm, saturated reds and pinks in the upper registers, reflecting the shift from pre-dawn shadow to the first light of day. By layering textures and abstract forms, I wanted to convey a sense of the terrain’s ruggedness and its simultaneous softness under the early morning light. The use of vibrant, contrasting colors and expressive brushwork embodies the transformative power of dawn, drawing attention to the interplay between land and sky and the merging of natural elements. If you look closely, you may see the image of a giraffe or two. This work speaks to the transient beauty of landscapes and the interplay of time, light, and place. This piece seeks not only to depict a landscape but also to evoke an emotional and sensory memory of Amboseli’s wilderness.

More Than One or Two Stars
- 24 x 20 in
This acrylic painting on cradled board was inspired by my visit to the quad at North Carolina Chapel Hill University and the nearby botanical gardens. The piece balances the structured forms of the buildings with the organic shapes of the surrounding vegetation, capturing the energy and movement of the space through abstraction. Soft greens and earthy tones reflect the gardens, while sharper geometric elements suggest the architecture. Fluid lines and overlapping forms create a sense of motion, representing the vibrancy of the environment. The painting explores the connection between human-made and natural elements, celebrating the richness and harmony of these shared spaces. This work is a reminder of how interconnected our environments are, blending structure with spontaneity to reflect the beauty of a dynamic, living space. Exhibited at juried show at Las Laguna Gallery Absolutely Abstract August 2024.

Arashiyama (2)
- 28 x 22 in
This acrylic painting on gallery-wrapped canvas explores the serene beauty of Arashiyama, a forested area near Kyoto, Japan. Inspired by my earlier Arashiyama work, I pushed deeper into abstraction, focusing on layered textures and soft color transitions that evoke the interplay of light and shadow through the bamboo groves and surrounding mountains. Muted greens and earthy tones suggest the forest canopy, while abstract forms hint at the village structures nestled within the landscape. The non-linear composition captures the atmosphere as a memory rather than a literal scene, blending nature and human presence into a harmonious whole. This piece reflects the quiet magic of Arashiyama, inviting contemplation of nature, culture, and time. It was awarded Honorable Mention prize in Teravarna 10th Open Juried Art Contest.
