Exit 35 (Study 1)
- 16 x 12 in
$4,800
Derived from a remembered stretch of the 101, the surface is constructed through layered paint and quick linear marks. A shift in the landscape—green emerging across dry ground—is translated into rhythm and interruption. Lines carry movement across the field, suggesting routes through a terrain in transition. Acrylic and pen on cradled board.

This painting on cradled hardboard is based on several photos I took while staying near Amboseli National Park in Kenya. The orange light of early dawn was as spellbinding as the scenery and I wanted to use abstraction to explore the interplay of color, texture and light. The composition abstracts the landscape, capturing not only the visual characteristics but also the ephemeral mood of sunrise in this iconic African setting. The painting’s color palette transitions from deep greens and blues in the foreground to warm, saturated reds and pinks in the upper registers, reflecting the shift from pre-dawn shadow to the first light of day. By layering textures and abstract forms, I wanted to convey a sense of the terrain’s ruggedness and its simultaneous softness under the early morning light. The use of vibrant, contrasting colors and expressive brushwork embodies the transformative power of dawn, drawing attention to the interplay between land and sky and the merging of natural elements. If you look closely, you may see the image of a giraffe or two. This work speaks to the transient beauty of landscapes and the interplay of time, light, and place. This piece seeks not only to depict a landscape but also to evoke an emotional and sensory memory of Amboseli’s wilderness.

The composition is built as a layered field, with organic forms and tonal shifts suggesting ground without defining it. Linear marks move across the surface, interrupting and redirecting the space. The result is a constructed environment that holds tension between continuity and fracture. Recognitions: 4th place in international Teravarna Abstract 2025 compettion.
