Exit 35 Chesebro Rd (2)
- 16 x 12 in
This is the second painting in the Exit 35 series. I took photos near Chesebro Road, where the hills turned green after the rain. In the studio, I built up the surface in layers, letting thin washes and heavier strokes mix together. Lines cut through the paint like roads. Small bursts of color break the green. The piece holds the push and pull of land and road, leaving the story open.

This painting on cradled hardboard delves into the idea of grounding—both physically and emotionally. The use of organic forms and natural colors reflects the connection to the earth, while the abstract nature of the piece suggests the fluid and layered experience of existing in the physical world. The bold red lines represent moments of disruption or energy that punctuate our otherwise grounded existence, highlighting the dynamic balance between stability and change. The painting was developed through multiple layers of paint, building depth and complexity. The base layers consist of broad, gestural strokes to establish a sense of movement and grounding. Subsequent layers incorporate more precise marks and translucent glazes, creating a sense of light and shadow that mirrors the textures of the natural environment. The composition is intentionally fragmented and abstract, with no clear focal point. This approach reflects the complex and interconnected nature of being earthbound, where elements coexist in balance and tension without a singular hierarchy. Painting won 4th place in international Teravarna Abstract 2025 compettion.

This is the first painting in the Exit 35 series. Driving west on the 101 this spring, I saw the hills turn green after months of brown. It felt sudden, almost unreal. I stopped near exit 35 and took photos. Back in the studio, I worked with layers and quick marks to hold the rhythm of the road and the bright shock of color. The piece tries to catch that moment when the land wakes up, and even an old highway feels new.
