Over the past year, I’ve been working on a series called “Holding Space.” The paintings begin with landscape. Begin is the important word. They don’t stay there. Landscape gives way to mindscape. Memory interferes. Images surface, shift and direct my hand. This painting began with the Santa Monica Mountains seen from the 101. Seen briefly. At speed. So, not the mountains exactly, but what remained of them. I love drawing. A line can interrupt a color, argue with it, change the whole direction of the painting. I add. Remove. Cover. Leave evidence. The finished work doesn’t describe a place. It holds the experience of one. Fragmented, revised and still moving.
